Real and HyperReal (2010)
Bruce Cohen’s precise painting of an interior populated only by a careful arrangement of richly colored flowers and austere furniture has the formality of a still life. Sharply rendered, the scene appears realistic at first glance, yet it is structured with strict geometry. The shapes of the objects fit firmly together like meticulously designed puzzle pieces. Although appears to be a straightforward account of the artist’s surroundings, it is permeated by a feeling of mystery. This domestic space is oddly empty of human figures. The vases of lilies and irises add life to the composition but the overall tone remains cold and austere. In the absence of clues, viewers are left to imagine what came before and what will follow in this quiet but uneasy corner of the studio.
